Stories and Shapes

This week in Nursery we have been focusing on talking about stories we have read, talking about aspects of our familiar world and exploring 2D shapes and their properties.

We read a story called ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and we have had lots of fun orally retelling the story using story puppets and character masks. Linked to the theme of the big bad wolf, we also read a non-fiction text all about ‘wolves.’ We learnt lots of interesting facts.

Did you know that baby wolves are called pups?

We learnt a new song all about the big bad wolf. Click here to hear it.

We made posters to warn people all about the big bad wolf and we put them around Nursery. If you see him, please let us know!

In numeracy we have been shape detectives, developing our awareness of 2D shapes and their properties. We looked at every day objects in the investigation area and we sorted them based on their shape. We even went on a shape hunt around the classroom and we found lots of different shapes. We talked about shapes and we practised drawing shapes too.

In phonics, Miss Pounder’s group have been listening carefully to initial phonemes in words and we have been developing our oral blending and segmenting skills. This week we have been focusing on the graphemes x, y and z and identifying them in words.

Mrs Edgar and Mrs Dean’s phonics groups have been developing their understanding of alliteration. We have been listening carefully to sounds at the beginning of words and distinguishing the difference between them. We have been exploring how different sounds are articulated to extend our understanding of alliteration. We particularly enjoyed exploring what was inside our sound bag and investigating what was inside Mrs Brown’s box.

It has been a very busy week in Nursery and we have been making our best better in order to be the best that we can be!

Keep checking Nursery’s webpage and the academy's Twitter page to find out what we have been getting up to! And remember…Keep your eyes open for the big bad wolf!

Next week our new letter of the week is ‘f.’ Can you think of anything that begins with this grapheme? Our new number of the week is 19. Can you count up to this number?
