Molly the Medic visits Class 4

This week, the children in Class 4 have completed a 'Mini Medic' course that provided them with the knowledge and skills for what to do in an emergency situation.

They found out about the roles of paramedics, firefighters, the police and lifeguards as well as when and how to contact these important services in an emergency:

The children role-played dialling 999 to ask for an ambulance and practised recalling the details they would be required to give to the emergency services over the phone:

They also learnt how to find out if a person was breathing and what actions they should take if they weren't:

Furthermore, the children were taught how to deal with someone who is choking. They were surprised to find out that if the person has asthma, you should not pat them on the back and should rub their back instead (after retrieving their inhaler of course)!

Finally, the children found out what to do if they cut their arm - cover the cut with their hand, raise their arms above their head and shout for help from a family member.

As you can see, the children learnt a lot from Molly the Medic and have each received a certificate in recognition of their new learning.

Other learning in Class 4 this week:

In Mathematics, the children have been practising partitioning two-digit numbers. As a result, most children can now confidently identify the value of tens and units/ones e.g. they know that in the number 27, the 2 is not actually 2 and is worth 2 tens (20).

In English, we have continued our work on the story 'How to Catch a Star'. Following the success of last week's Talk for Writing activity in supporting us to write the Super Story Opener, we have used the same strategy of putting actions to the story to enable us to write the Brilliant Build-up and Punchy Problem. We are very excited to finish the story next week when we write the Rescue Resolution and Excellent Ending before having a go at writing our own version of the story.
Check back next week to find out how we got on!
